Soldering Workshops at Surrey Christian School

These were a series of workshops done at the Surrey Christian School. Another instructor, Karen Cancino and I would run a soldering workshop as part of a grade 8 humanities class.

The amount of students varied from 12 to 15 and most (if not all) had no prior experience in soldering. Over a few hours they would learn to identify some parts, what an electrical circuit was, basic iron safety, and how to solder together their own “bugbot”, which consisted of a few simple parts and resulting in a simple “bug” that would vibrate over a surface.

During these workshop, I noticed that some of the kids were quite surprising in their ability to solder: being able to have very clean joints, bridge pins well, and in some cases learning on the spot how to use a solder sucker to desolder and fix minor issues.

The workshops were well received and we've been asked to run them multiple times over different semesters.
